Deborah Johnson
Deborah Johnson has always been an artist. As a young child she enjoyed making paintings for family so when she finally arrived in high school she was thrilled by all the many mediums of art. She quickly found a niche in clay and pottery. Her talent was such that her art teacher encouraged her to pursue art in college but her interest at that time was fashion design and life took a different turn for awhile.
Color plays a central role in her creations as she feels that color contributes to mood. Just as she feels love and joy as she creates and puts these feelings into all her artwork, her hope is that the colors and creations bring the beholder happiness and joy too.
The colorful and impressionistic forms of art, especially the art of Claude Monet and Van Gogh have influenced her as has the study of other people's art and brush strokes. Deborah's love of impressionism and color translates to her art which she feels is impressionistic with lots of color and a touch of whimsy. True to the artist within her, her interest in artworks and her large collection of different materials allows her to create in a wide range of mediums.
Deborah's exploration of expression in other mediums has lead her to her latest creations of wax candles in her own functional concrete candle vessels. She pours her own wax which she scents and colors and makes the candle holders to match. In addition she is exploring a return to working with clay and pottery as well as digital art to create whimsical characters and paintings for children.
The Leaping Lizard Art Gallery is home to a nice sampling of Deborah Johnson's encaustic paintings, candles, and some whimsy pieces.
